People now have access to all of their favorite magazine’s right at their fingertips through an app called Texture. With Texture, you can create a list of your favorite magazines and have the whole entire issue saved to your phone. Here is the list of my favorites:
I recently watched the “Picture Me” documentary by American fashion model, Sara Ziff. This documentary showed her experience in the fashion industry as a model. I was inspired by her handwork and determination to make it in the competitive industry. I was not shocked when I heard her stories of being treated poorly and overworked, and I was even more uninspired to hear of the sexual harassment stories that are involved in some model’s runway castings. This documentary made almost feel bad about going into an industry that almost supports this lifestyle until I realized that I am capable of making a difference wherever I end up working one day. I believe this documentary is opening the eyes of a lot of workers in the fashion world and changing their opinions on how to treat people in general, rather than just the models.
I was very excited to discover Sara stared an organization called “The Model Alliance” in 2012. At first their goal was to give models a voice in their work. They now also aim to promote fair treatment, equal opportunity, and more sustainable practices in the fashion industry, from the runway to the factory floor.
Three weeks ago the New York Times published an investigative article about the DECADES of sexual harassment allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. Every sense then, women in every work industry, most even working in the Capital, are coming forward to say “Me Too”.
I am proud of these women for taking the courage to come forward as I think it will help show society how big of an issue sexual harassment is.
This week my class had the opportunity to go to FIT and see their collection of clothing from numerous designers from the 1800s through the beginning of the 2000s.
My class and I had the amazing opportunity to visit the Moncler Showroom. Two ladies who work in the women’s wholesale department spoke to us about the company and how much growth the company has made in the past year. They have experienced so much growth that WWD has recently given them a reward!
A few of Moncler’s clients include: Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf’s, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus. Each store has a different assortment of their products. The wholesale team does an amazing job at identifying who shops at each of their clients stores. They do this buy traveling to each store and watching the buyers and analyzing how they style their Moncler. Recently, Moncler has been closing accounts with some of their retailers to maintain the exclusivity of the brand.
Moncler is mostly known for their phenomenal outerwear but they also have knitwear, swimwear, and a children’s line. I am so happy I was able to go to the Moncler showroom and learn about the amazing company.
The production manager at a magazine is the boss who manages all the inputs from editorial, advertising, and art departments that piece together a coordinated, wholesome, magazine. This is a very demanding job and requires the production manager to “speak content”. They need to know everything about the magazine and need to be highly skilled at knowing which content would work well with making the magazine coordinated.
This past week, study tour took a trip to one of my favorite retailer companies, Nordstrom. I was extremely excited to get an inside look at my favorite companies office (I have been dreaming of working for them for at least 3 years now). A lady named Jamie who is an assistant site merchandiser at Nordstrom Rack in their new beauty department, spoke to us. She told us about the history of Nordstrom and Hautelook and she also talked about what her job entails. Her job was really fascinating to me. She does a mix between e-commerce and planning and buying. She has to pay close attention to how many people are viewing an item and then actually go on to make the purchase. She also has to make sure the caption of the item grabs the customers attention, and the product dimensions always have to be labeled so the customer knows what they are buying. This study tour was so interesting to me and I was excited to learn about a position in the fashion industry that I had never heard about, especially at a company that I love so much.

The month of fashion has officially come and gone, leaving me crazy inspired!! Paris Fashion Week ended the month of fashion last week. We saw designers like Céline, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel show their S/S 2018 collections. Although I appreciate every designer, my favorite collection was Céline’s.
This past Thursday, my class and I were invited to come to Material Connexion and got to walk through their library of materials, which is the leading source of materials for companies all around the world. To access this library, a company or person must have a subscription and with it, you gain access to the in-person library and online data base. Material Connexion has over 8,000 materials and add at least 30 new & unique materials each month. Companies like Nike frequently visit this library to learn about the new materials and to come up with new ideas for their products.
The materials are put into categories of what they are made of, rather than what they have been used for. I liked this because it gives people the opportunity to get creative about what they will use these materials for. The materials are also rated on how sustainable they are. The icons show if they are compostable, biodegradable, organic, etc. This is very valuable to companies who are looking for unique materials to take their brands to a whole new level.
